Artist's Comments

"We had discovered our own language . . . the language of somnambulism. It lived within all men and was without simple prejudices based on country, culture and creed. But like all languages, it was not without its complications. To sleep walk one must pass through dreams, as well as nightmares, and it now seemed that the night terrors were without boundaries. They had followed us into our waking world, casting long shadows across our blue skies. Sending chills deep into our young bones on the sunniest of days.

What would become of our new language? Would it disappear like so many others before it? Cast aside by its speakers as they left their old worlds behind, or would it be torn from us? Stolen away by raiding nightmares as they raped and pillaged our waking world. . ."

~ excerpt from The Somnambulist Club

Second upload of this piece today. Made minor changes and put it in the correct section of devart this time. The image and text are from a work in progress ~ an illustrated short horror story entitled The Somnambulist Club. Since this is a work in progress feedback ~ both negative and positive ~ is hugely appreciated.

I definitely prefer this version to the other. The contrasts and tonal range are much more suited to the subject matter, in my opinion. Old maps are among my favorite things on earth and I like the map you're using here a LOT. The items you've chosen to display are intersting and evocative.

Your deviation.... um... the one with the skeletal thing and the key... (I'm terrible at remembering names). In that description you mentioned you were planning to illustrate a book in that style; is this the book you were refering to?

I forgot to say on the other version how much I admire the manipulation... It looks so transparent without any fuzziness, love seeing all the layers... they look almost delicate... very tactile - it makes me feel like I want to imagine very gently touching the image :) (Smile) ...
